Aftermath of Alex

July 1st, 2010

Alex made landfall late yesterday around 10pm near San Fernando, Mexico.  Alex spawned 5 tornadoes along the Eastern Texas coast and brought heavy rainfall to the area.  Several locations have reported receiving record rainfall from Alex.  More reports are expected over the next day or two.  Here is some information that has been submitted so far:

2 tornadoes were reported in Cameron County, TX.  And one tornado was reported in each of these three counties: Willacy, Matagora, and Refugio.

Interestingly there were no high wind reports submitted to SPC yesterday.

Brownsville International Airport received 5.86 inches of rain yesterday smashing the previous record of 3.80 set back in 1995.  Harlingen International Airport also broke their record rainfall after receiving 3.43 inches of rain.  McAllen Miller International Airport reported a whopping 6.66 inches of rainfall blowing their previous record of .85 inches (in 2007) out of the water.  Corpus Christi received 3.38 inches of rainfall yesterday.  Other locations in the area appear to have received at least 3-4 inches of rain.

Here is the radar image displaying radar estimated rainfall totals (image courtesy of Brownsville National Weather Service):
